Last weekend I attended The Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrator's Winter Conference, right here in NYC! It was three jam-packed days filled with information, inspiration and socializing. I LOVED IT! Highlights for me included a fantastic opening speech by children's book icon Tomie dePaola, a hilarious one by Jack Gantos, and a really inspirational one on the spectacular value of failure by Kate Messner.
I got to spend my time with friends, old and new, all with a common passion and desire to make amazing books for children. I attended the extra day that was an intensive for illustrators. There we were critiqued on an assignment by a revered profession in the field. The assignment was to illustrate a page from Snow White in a way that is your own. My piece is below, and I'm really grateful that it went over very well in the critique. Because I have taken multiple sessions of a class this year, I have gotten into a routine of waking up and practicing my craft. Feeling like my hard work is paying off is such a great feeling!!!
I left the conference with loads of inspiration and a nice list of contacts to reach out to. If you are an aspiring children's book writer or illustrator I highly recommend joining the SCBWI! They're a wonderful organization with so many resources.
